Book Sale A sale of used nature books will be held at the festival.

Instructions will be given, and there will be a minimal charge for the dyeing ($5.00). This will be a great way to recycle an old t-shirt.

Pet Supply Drive The Middle School Green Team will be collecting old pet toys, beds, treats, and other materials at the Earth Day celebration. All supplies and monetary donations will be given to the Espanola Animal Shelter, which has a great need for gear and volunteer this time of the year.

Earth Day Talk: Foundations of a Sustainable Society
Wednesday, April 27
Fuller Lodge
Reception at 6:30 p.m. Talk at 7:00 p.m.
Dr. Donald O'Sullivan from Los Alamos National Laboratory will speak at Fuller Lodge, in a free talk sponsored by the PEEC and the Laboratory. LANL participated in the oil spill clean-up and the NM gas outage recovery - hear what advances are being made in greening our infrastructure.
As society continues to recognize the importance of a sustainable and greener planet, one element often gets underemphasized: the infrastructure and resource systems that provide the foundation for our civilization. While there are many important technologies and scientific efforts that can improve sustainability and minimize environmental impacts - they can only be effective if the world's infrastructure and resource systems can adapt to incorporate these new technologies and resources.
Likewise, understanding the impacts of our current resources can help us understand how to improve and evolve our future systems and resource needs. As the oil spill disaster of 2010 and the New Mexico Gas Outage of 2011 illustrated, our current resource dependencies are not without significant risk (without even accounting for climate change). In addition to presenting Los Alamos National Lab's involvement in these two efforts it will be explained how understanding these risks can also help society develop the systems of the future that minimize risks and vulnerabilities. In addition to reducing negative impacts on the environment, forward looking and well designed systems can also improve reliability, reduce threats and enhance national security.
