April 26: Party for PEEC & Auction of Guided Outings and More
Our Earth Day theme - Tree of Life - brings attention to the importance of conservation, on this bicentennial year of the birth of Charles Darwin. The Tree of Life metaphor was used by Darwin, who perceived unity in life, with all organisms related through descent from an ancestor that lived in the remote past.
Join us this Earth Day as we honor Charles Darwin, celebrate the diversity of life, and contemplate our role in preserving the Earth's biodiversity. Contacts for further information are below.
Evolution and Conservation in the Galapagos: A Window to Worldwide Patterns?
Wednesday, April 22
Fuller Lodge
6:30 p.m. Refreshments & music
7:00 p.m. Talk by Dr. Howard Snell
The Galapagos are famous for their role in improving our understanding of evolutionary processes around the world. More recently the islands have gained recognition as an important laboratory where conservation strategies are being effectively tested. In Dr. Snell's talk we'll review some of the recent discoveries about evolution that have occurred in the Galapagos as well as explore several successes and failures of biodiversity conservation, all against a background of the wonderful animals and plants that occur nowhere else on earth. From his experiences in the Galapagos he will talk about conservation closer to home.
Dr. Howard Snell is the former Director of Science at the Charles Darwin Research Station, a curator at the Museum of Southwestern Biology, and professor of biology at UNM. He has worked for many years in the Galapagos studying iguanas, lava lizards, and tortoises. Presently Dr. Snell and his graduate students are working in New Mexico on tools to better identify regions of conservation concern. His free talk is sponsored by the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Join us at 6:30 to hear the popular folk duo Sweet Wednesday and enjoy refreshments.
