Earth Day 2008

Clan Tynker

Theme

Earth Day 2008 was celebrated in Los Alamos on the weekend of April 26-27. The theme of the Earth Day celebration was "Hot Ideas for a Cool County," in support of efforts to reduce carbon emissions and to obtain the designation "Cool County" for Los Alamos (see Cool Cities web site).

Festival

Shashi

Our main Earth Day event was the Festival on April 26. At the Festival, there were displays by community groups of their earth-friendly products and practices, and of information about our local environment on the Pajarito Plateau.

Festival Entertainment

Clan Tynker, the European Renaissance entertainment group, gave another great performance this year. Clan Tynker's programs are non-stop kaleidoscopes of acts - including juggling, stilt-walking, magic, fire-breathing, and music - that appeal to young and old alike. Clan Tynker's performance was sponsored by Los Alamos National Bank.

Additional musical entertainment was provided by Shashi.

Plan: We have requested written permission to walk up Los Alamos Canyon into the closed area on the National Forest. This is a location where we have heard and seen singing MacGillivray's Warblers in during past springs. FREE

Fire Ecology Hike

Led by Bandelier ranger Chris Judson

Sunday, April 27, 12:30 p.m.

The second Sunday outing is a fire ecology hike. On this easy one-hour hike, participants will see what a forest looks like 30 years after a severe crown fire, in this case the La Mesa Fire. Participants should meet at Ponderosa Campground (near the back gate) at 12:30 p.m. and wear long pants and shoes because of the prickly plants in the hike area. Please note that no pets should be brought on either of these outings. FREE
