Presenter: George W. Dickerson, Extension Horticulture Specialist in the Plant Sciences Department with NMSU, will discuss general water harvesting principles and practical homeowner applications, including "retrofitting a canal(e) to a gutter downspout" and "making a rain barrel for under $20.00."
County Trash Pick-Up

Deer Trap Mesa Scavenger Hunt

Kids 8 and older join this fun hike along Deer Trap Mesa. Meet intersection of Barranca and Navajo Rds.
Bandelier Trash Pick-up
Sunday, April 16, 4:30-6:30
Park Ranger Chris Judson will lead a trash pick-up. Wear sturdy shoes, hats, gloves. Meet at the cross-country ski trailhead (Cerro Grande trailhead) parking lot on State Route 4.
Toddler and Preschooler Fun Hike
Monday, April 17, 10-11:30 am, PEEC
Toddlers and preschoolers are invited on a fun hike, led by Diana McPherson. Participants should meet at PEEC for this entertaining and educational hike. Infants are also welcome. Kids will learn about nature's colors, shapes, and textures with a scavenger hunt and "I Spy" game. There will be a short snack break.Bring water and a snack (please leave nut and peanut snacks at home) and wear hiking/sturdy shoes and sunscreen. In case of rain or high winds, the activities will be inside the PEEC building.
Los Alamos Canyon Rim Hike

Did you know that the Downtown Plan proposes a Los Alamos Canyon Rim Walk running along the edge of the canyon behind businesses from the Trinity Site to the newly proposed Los Alamos Plaza? The spectacular views of the canyon could make this walkway a beautiful enticement for visitors and residents alike to enjoy our downtown area. Join Craig Martin, Los Alamos County Open Space Specialist, to explore the possibilities that would help to revitalize our downtown. Meet at the County Annex, 901 Trinity Drive.
Neighborhood Permaculture

Mary Zemach, Martha Davis, and Kathy Campbell will present a program on permaculture designs for Los Alamos gardens and communities. They will share exhibits and films, allowing plenty of time to discuss how permaculture ideas can contribute to
- sustainable food production,
- landscape diversity,
- the use and reuse of everything from newspapers to water to money, and
- connections throughout your garden, your neighborhood, and the community.
Homestead Era Hike to Beanfield Mesa
April 18, 9 a.m.
Dorothy Hoard, well-known historic trails expert, will lead a Homestead Era Hike to Beanfield Mesa, meeting at PEEC to organize carpooling to the trailhead. Access to Beanfield Mesa is by trail to abandoned homestead roads north of Barranca Mesa. The hike is moderately difficult, approximately four to five miles. Hikers need to wear sturdy boots, bring water and snacks, and wear hats and sunscreen.
Sustainable Transportation in Los Alamos: What It Means, What It Looks Like, How We Can Get There

Is there life after oil? How will we get around in Los Alamos and get “off the Hill” after the gas goes? Will our quality of life be threatened or enhanced if we reduce our transportation use of fossil fuels by 75%, and reduce noise and emission pollution by 75%? Fortunately, other advanced nations who have always had a shortage of fossil fuels have already developed and refined surprisingly viable solutions to what seems like a vexing problem to us. One scenario might be a mix of ultra-high efficiency cars for local use, combined with electric trolleybuses for regional use and ultra-high speed trains for interstate travel. Richard Dunn, founder of GreenWheels, a White Rock-based non-profit institution dedicated to the design and adoption of sustainable transportation systems, will address these questions and provide a glimpse into a sustainable transportation future.

Tuff Riders Trail Work

Join the Tuff Riders Mountain Bike Club for Earth Day trail work, meeting at the PEEC. Please wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and bring water. The Club will provide tools, if you don't have any to bring. Performing trail maintenance regularly helps preserve our local trails. The Tuff Riders coordinates with Craig Martin, Los Alamos County Open Space Specialist, and normally performs trail maintenance twice a month (from April to October).
Putting Your Money Where Your Mouth Is: Investing in Sustainable Solutions

The Los Alamos Sustainable Energy Network (LASE Net) is hosting a panel discussion on "Investing in Sustainable Solutions." The panel consists of Shannon Lumpkin from Universal Advisory Services; Kim Kiel from First Affirmative Financial Network; Dan Puccetti from New Mexico Community Development Loan Fund; and Liz Cavasos from Los Alamos National Bank. The panelists will talk about their specific focuses in sustainable investing, with time for questions after each presentation.
Readings from the Earth

La Nuestra Tierra: Opening Art Show Reception

In honor of Earth Day, the art show, La Tierra Nuestra, will open with a reception at the Art Center and run through June 3rd. The juried show focuses on art work in all media inspired by the natural history of the valleys, rivers, deserts, canyons, mesas, and mountains of Northern New Mexico. This show is co-sponsored by PEEC and the Art Center with is located at Fuller Lodge at 2132 Central Avenue in Los Alamos and open between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Geology of the Pajarito Plateau

Dave Broxton, geologist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, will give a talk about the geological setting of the Pajarito Plateau as it relates to the Jemez Volcanic Field and Espanola Basin. His work at LANL is on groundwater protection.
Bird-banding Demonstration
Saturday, April 22, sunrise to 1 p.m., Bandelier NM
Wildlife biologist Stephen Fettig will conduct bird-banding in Frijoles Canyon (10 minutes upstream from the Bandelier Visitor Center). Nets will be opened about sunrise and work will continue until 1 p.m. if the weather is good. Visit the station to see and learn about our local and migrant birds.
Tuff Riders Trail Ride

All riders, including non-members, are welcome to ride with us. We just ask that you have a basic understanding of off-road riding skills, a helmet, and a good attitude! The beginner ride will probably ride Bridges. The intermediate ride will probably ride Perimeter starting in the western area, looping around the golf course, and coming back Bridges. The advanced ride will probably ride out from technical Bridges, climb Cabra, descend Pajarito, climb Rendija, descend Shoeshine, then come back Bridges. All rides will leave from the PEEC, but please park in the high school parking lot. Meet at 8:45, and depart at 9 a.m. http://tuffriders.losalamos.com/
